What is an Aviation Medical Examiner?

Aviation Medical Examiners (AMEs) are private physicians trained and authorized by the FAA to perform airman medical examinations, and to issue medical certificates. New AMEs are designated based upon the local demand for aeromedical certification services.

The FAA has approximately 4,800 civilian AME's located in 9 regions, 410 international AMEs located in 91 countries, and 400 federal AMEs (military, U.S. Coast Guard, NASA, and other agencies). These AMEs perform approximately 450,000 medical examinations every year in fulfilling the aeromedical certification needs of about 17,000 air traffic controllers and 640,000 pilots in the U.S and abroad.

Aviation Medical Examiners are a key element in the medical certification process, ensuring that airmen meet the medical standards prescribed in the Federal Aviation Regulations, and are medically fit to perform safety-related duties. AMEs play a vital role in the FAA Office of Aerospace Medicine's goal to promote aviation safety through excellence in aeromedical certification of airmen. Although most of the duties performed by AMEs are governed by Federal Regulations and Orders (directives), AMEs are not Federal employees.

Who must hold an FAA Medical Certificate?

Any person acting as pilot-in-command or other required crewmember of an aircraft (except for free balloons, gliders, and ultralights) must hold a current and appropriate medical certificate. This includes student pilots in solo flight as well as private, commercial, and airline pilots.

Class 2 (12 months)
A second-class airman medical certificate is required for commercial, non-airline duties (e.g., for crop dusters, corporate pilots). Those exercising the privileges of a flight engineer certificate, a flight navigator certificate, or acting as air traffic control tower operator must hold a second-class airman medical certificate.

Class 3 (24-60 months)
A third-class airman medical certificate is required to exercise the privileges of a private pilot certificate, recreational pilot certificate, a flight instructor certificate, or a student pilot certificate.

Dr. Henry is a certified Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). He performs flight physicals and issues Class II and Class III medical certificates for civilian pilots. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Henry, please call the Hannibal Regional Medical Group at 573-629-3330.
